“Ringing out the play” – A Puppet Skit
Characters:
Mrs. Bumble – the energetic drama teacher
Mrs. Bumble: Okay, everyone! The audience is arriving, the lights are dimming, and it's almost time for… (dramatic pause) …the greatest school play ever performed in the cafeteria-turned-auditorium!
Tommy: Woohoo! This is gonna be epic! I’ve practiced my line 4,327 times! Wanna hear it?
Sally: No, Tommy. We’ve *all* heard it. Even Mr. Richard knows it by heart.
Rufus: Wait... there’s a play today?!
(Ensemble groans)
Mrs. Bumble: Alright, Alright Alright, my little thespians! One final check: props?
All Students: Check!
Mrs. Bumble: Costumes?
All Students: Check!
Mrs. Bumble: Cell phones off?
Tommy: Check!
Sally: Tommy, you need to double check!
Rufus: ...Uh…..do I get a cell phone?
(Ensemble groans again)
Mrs. Bumble:.. Just making sure! Nothing ruins a dramatic moment like a--
(Suddenly, a ridiculously loud, silly ringtone plays: something like a chicken clucking “The Chicken Dance.”)
Phone: 🎵 Bawk bawk-bawk-bawk bawk, bawk bawk-bawk bawk... 🎵
Sally (scandalized): Is that... *the Chicken Dance*?!
Tommy (giggling): I thought it was coming from the orchestra pit!
Rufus (checking his shoes): Is it in my sock?
Phone: 🎵 Bawk bawk-bawk-bawk bawk, bawk bawk-bawk bawk... 🎵
Mrs. Bumble (frantic): Whose phone is that?! This is a phone-free zone! A sacred temple of drama!
(The ringtone keeps playing. The puppets all start searching under props and inside costumes.)
Sally: This is outrageous! What kind of person brings a phone to a performance?
Tommy (Laughing): Maybe it's a chicken trying to audition.
Phone: 🎵 Bawk bawk-bawk-bawk bawk, bawk bawk-bawk bawk... 🎵...
Now with extra feathers! 🎵
Mrs. Bumble (suspiciously): Wait a minute…
(She pulls out a phone — it's playing the ringtone.)
Aha!
Ensemble: *Gasp!* It was YOU?!
Mrs. Bumble (sheepishly): Oops… I guess I was so busy directing, I forgot to silence my own phone.
Rufus (smiling): Can we have a chicken dance off?
Everyone: Chicken Dance offf!!!!
Tommy (dancing): I vote yes!
Sally: No! The show must go on. Silent your phones.
Mrs. Bumble (clicks it off): Off it goes aaaaaaannnnnd, Action!

All Puppets (together): Bak bak bak bak bak bak bak bak!
(Make your puppet bow.) The End.
